Updating a device in a smart meter system using recognition of unique identifiers over a combination of networks

Disclosed is a method and system for communication using a meter (106). The method includes receiving via a first network (202), by a meter (106) connected to the first network (202) and connected to a second network (110), information for a device (204) operably connected to said first network (202) such that the information includes a unique identifier for said device (204). The method further includes transmitting via the second network (110), by the meter (106) connected to the first network (202) and the second network (110), at least the unique identifier (304) of the device (204) and a meter identifier (302) that uniquely identifies the meter (106) to a second computing device (108) connected to the second network (110) wherein the second network (110) is a smart-grid network. The unique identifier for the device (204) and the meter identifier are received by said second computing device (108). A third network receives network update information for the device (204) by said second computing device (108) and the second computing device (108) transmits the update information to the meter (106) via the second network (110) using the unique identifier for the device (204) and the meter identifier. The meter (106) then transmits the update information to the device (204) and updates the device (204) with the update information.
