Disclosed is a system (200) for powering an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) communication board (210) associated with a power meter (205). The system (200) includes a smart power meter (205) which itself is comprised of a meter metrology component (225) and a Universal Serial Bus (USB) device controller (215). The meter metrology component (225) is configured to monitor an amount of energy supplied via a power line. The USB device controller (215) is configured to interface with a USB connection (250). The system also includes an AMI board (210) that is configured to facilitate communication over an AMI network and has a USB host controller (220) configured to communicate with the USB device controller (215). The USB host controller (220) and the AMI board (210) are powered by the USB device controller (215) via the USB connection (250).
