The method involves passing a fresh air volume stream (10) to be heated and a flue gas volume stream (11) to be cooled through a rotor. An inflow and outflow fresh air volume streams (10a, 10b) is absorbed at a front side (5a, 5b) of the rotor, respectively. The heated and the cooled fresh air and flue gas volume stream at the rotor are sealed by a rotor seal, and a leakage volume stream occurred at the rotor is guided to the heated air volume stream. The leakage volume stream is interrupted at the front sides of the rotor and guided to the inflow and outflow gas volume streams. An independent claim is also included for a regenerative heat exchanger comprising a rotor.
