A method of determining the effect of a spill on a marineenvironment, in which physical and chemical sensors arearranged with living organisms fitted with instruments, atan appropriate distance and position from the object whichis to be monitored, wherein the response of the livingorganism, measured online in real time, is compared withknown patterns of response, and where upstream anddownstream measurements are compared to determine whethera change in response may be caused by a spill from theobject, the significance of the real time measurementsbeing validated through sampling of the organisms on aregular basis or as required, in order to analyze theeffects on the health of the organisms, biomarkers, forthe purpose of assessing the significance of theenvironmental effect.
