Biological nutrient removal (BNR) in wastewater treatment to removecarbonaceous substrates, nutrients and phosphorus,has recently become increasingly popular worldwide due to increasinglystringent regulations. Biological fluidized bed(BFB) technology, which could be potentially used for BNR processes, canprovide some advantages such as high efficiency andcompact structure. This present invention incorporates the fixed-filmbiological fluidized bed technology with the biological nutrientremoval in a twin liquid-solid fluidized bed, which has achieved thesimultaneous elimination of organic carbon, nitrogen andphosphorus, in a very efficient manner and with very compact spacerequirements. The BNR-LSFB has two fluidized beds, runningas anoxic/anaerobic and aerobic processes to accomplish simultaneousnitrification and denitrification and to remove carbonaceoussubstrates, nutrients and phosphorus, with continuous liquid and solidsrecirculation through the anoxic/anaerobic bed and the aerobicbed. The new BNR-LSFB system is not only an excellent alternative forconventional activated sludge type BNR technologiesbut is also capable of processing much higher loadings and suitable forindustrial applications.
