A method for controlling admissions of data packetsacross a packet network comprising the steps of establishing acommunication route along a plurality of interconnected secondarynodes, determining an amount of available network and determiningwhether to admit the data packets to the communication route basedon the determined amount of available network bandwidth. Alsodisclosed is a system for implementing the method comprising a firstprovider edge element, a second provider edge element, a plurality ofinterconnected secondary nodes disposed between the edge elements.Each of the secondary nodes comprises at least one first detectiondevice for determining an amount of available network bandwidth andat least one admission device in communication with the respectivefirst detection device for determining whether to admit the data packetsto the communication route based on the determined amount ofavailable network bandwidth.
