A process including contacting an alkyl benzene sulfonate surfactant having anammonium salt counter ion with a component to be emulsified or dispersed,wherein the alkyl benzene sulfonate surfactant is substantially free of sodiumsalt counter ions such that the sodium content of the alkyl benzene sulfonatesurfactant is less than about 5,000 parts per million, and water to form amixture; using the alkyl benzene sulfonate surfactant to emulsify thecomponent and form an emulsion; or using the alkyl benzene sulfonatesurfactant to disperse the component and form a dispersion.
