A method in accordance with one embodiment of the invention includes obtainingseismic trace data for a region of interest; processing the seismic trace datato calculate at least one spectrum for at least one sample from the seismic data;calculating at least one dominant frequency (CQD) for the at least one spectrum;calculating at least one measure of energy loss at frequencies above the at leastone dominant frequency ((QD) on the at least one spectrum; and locating a hydrocarbonreservoir in the region of interest using the at least one dominant frequency(CQD) and the at least one measure of energy loss.
