A sample introducing device for an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) comprises: an inner sleeve element, defining an inner cavity inside, which is connected to the inlet of the drift tube by an inner passage on one end and has an inner lid with an inner hole on the other end; and an outer sleeve element, which is an eccentric sleeve set coaxially with and rotatably relative to the inner sleeve element in order to form a sleeve cavity between the inner and outer sleeve element. One end of the outer sleeve element is provided with at least one through-hole which is selectively connected with the inner passage, and the other end is provided with an outer lid on which there are a first outer hole selectively connected with the inner hole, and a second outer hole selectively connected with the sleeve cavity. The outer lid is rotatable between a first and second position with respect to the inner lid, so as to selectively introduce the sample under test from the inner cavity or the sleeve cavity into the inner passage. In addition, methods of introducing solid and gas samples with said sample introducing device and an ion mobility spectrometer are also provided.
