A system, apparatus, and method for encoding and decoding a video stream having a plurality of frames is disclosed. The embodiments include receiving one or more initial encoded frames of the plurality of frames from a transmitting station, the one or more initial encoded frames encoded using a first encoding scheme, processing the one or more initial encoded frames using a computing device having a processor, determining the resource utilization of the computing device, and if the resource utilization exceeds a threshold, sending a request to the transmitting station to encode frames of the plurality of frames using a second encoding scheme that requires fewer resources to decode.
