Provided is a video processing device that quickly identifies the distribution format of a stream of display data such as subtitles and generates display data using a processing method that is in accordance with the identified distribution format. The video processing device carries out the following: receiving a transport stream that includes a display-data data stream that is displayed with 3D video and includes additional information that indicates whether both a left-eye data stream and a right-eye data stream are present in the display data; determining the presence or absence in the transport stream of the left-eye data stream and the right-eye data stream on the basis of the additional information; generating, if such data streams are determined to be present, left-eye display data from the left-eye data stream and right-eye display data from the right-eye data stream; and generating, if such data streams are absent, left-eye display data and right-eye display data from the data stream.
