A method for synthesizing tributyl citrate using a compound ion liquid as catalyst. Citric acid and N-butyl are used in the present invention as raw material and undefrgo esterification reaction under the effect of the catalyst. After reaching sufficient esterification, decompressed dealcoholization is directly carried out in a reaction kettle using the residual heat so as to obtain a tributyl citrate crude product comprising the catalyst. Acetylation reaction is then carried out. After deacidification, standing and cooling, catalyst separation, neutralization, water-washing, and decompressed distillation, colorless, transparent liquid tributyl citrate is obtained without decolorization filter pressing. The present invention uses the same type of catalyst of the same amount during esterification and acylation, thereby enabling repeated uses of the catalyst. The conversion rate is high, the byproduct is little, and the yield rate exceeds 98%. Post-treatment is convenient, as no excessive alkaline water neutralization or water-washing is needed. Clean water for washing can be repeatedly used as no pollutant is emitted. The reaction temperature is low, the production cycle is short, and the equipment investment, energy consumption, and production cost are low.
