A device (D) is intended to assist a driver with manoeuvring a vehicle (V). This device (D) comprises processing means (MT) designed i) to estimate, firstly, an overall reaction time in order to initiate a change to the operation of the vehicle (V) as a function of at least one item of information chosen to be representative of the current use being made of the vehicle (V) and/or of at least one item of information chosen to be representative of the environment of the vehicle (V) and of a first estimate of the distance separating a part of the vehicle (V) from an obstacle located in its environment and of a second estimate of the relative speed of the vehicle (V) with respect to this obstacle, and secondly, a level of risk of collision between the vehicle (V) and an obstacle situated in its environment as a function of the first estimate, of the second estimate, and of the estimated overall reaction time, and ii) to generate a message indicative of the estimated level of risk.
