The corners (27-30) of the hat profile are folded towards the peripheral edges of pairs of clamping rolls (22-24) for the side flanges (16, 17) and support rolls (25, 26) for the central flange. A clamping roll pair or support roll can be moved during forming in order to alter the hat profile. A method for forming a beam with a hat profile which varies over the beam length comprises roll forming a flat metal sheet in several forming stations. The hat profile has a central flange, two flanks (14, 15) and two side flanges. In the forming stations each side flange is clamped between a pair of clamping rolls and all four corners of the beam are formed simultaneously between the clamping roll pairs and at least one support roll for the central flange. The corners are folded towards the peripheral edges of the clamping and support rolls. At least one of the clamping roll pairs or support rolls is moved during forming in order to alter the hat profile. An independent claim is also included for a roll forming machine used to carry out this method, containing forming stations with a pair of clamping rolls for each side flange and at least one support roll for the central flange, the pairs of clamping rolls being movable sideways and vertically during a forming operation.
