METHODS AND APPARATUSES FOR ENCODING AND DECODING VIDEO USING ADAPTIVE REFERENCE PICTURES MEMORY MANAGEMENT SCHEME TO SUPPORT TEMPORAL SCALABILITY

Recent video coding schemes support inter-picture prediction from a number of previously-coded pictures. Recent video coding schemes also support coding of pictures using temporal levels which indicate hierarchical layers of picture rates. However, these video coding schemes do not consider temporal level in managing the memory for reference pictures. The current invention provides method and apparatus for the memory management of reference pictures for bi-predictive inter picture prediction using temporal level. The benefit of the current invention is in the form of improving error resilience when temporal scalability is used.
