In a method and a device for drilling, in particular percussion drilling or rotary percussion drilling, holes in soil material or rock material, wherein a drill hole is formed by a percussive and/or rotary movement by a drill bit (3) mounted on a multipart drill pipe (2), it is provided for individual elements (7) of the extendable drill pipe (2) to be coupled together at their mutually facing end sides via mutually complementary profiling (10, 11) by a combination of a movement thereof in the axial direction and a movement in the radial direction in relation to one another, wherein the movement of the drill pipe elements (7) in relation to one another in the radial direction is selected to be in the direction of the rotary movement of the drill pipe (2) during the drilling operation and over less than 360°, in particular less than 180° of the circumference of the drill pipe (2). Furthermore, a connecting element (8, 9) for use in such a method and in such a device is provided.
