A method of automated network topology discovery in passive optical networks in which an optical line terminal (OLT) is connected to a plurality of optical network units (ONUs) via a plurality of optical splitters and an ONU and an OLT capable of carrying out the method of automated network topology discovery. The method includes for each of the ONUs:- launching an optical pulse into the passive optical network;- measuring power of reflected light; and- transmitting measure data comprising a distance information about a distance of the ONU to one or more of the optical splitters to the OLT.
