The engine has a common-rail-fuel-injection system with an unregulated high pressure pump. A low pressure control valve (6) in a fuel supply line in the pump is activated and is controlled by an electronic controller (13). The pump is connected with a high pressure storage device by a high pressure line. A high pressure control valve (11) determines a volume flow to be controlled and is controlled by the controller. The high pressure valve is activated in a high-pressure system. The valves are controlled without change-over between low pressure and high pressure control processes. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a common-rail-fuel-injection system of an internal combustion engine.
