The method involves detecting and evaluating the movement of an approximated or applied finger in two operating-directions (14a,14b) perpendicular to each other independent of each other by a sensor-control panel (13) of an operating unit (11). The unit-place (19) is carried out through the movement of the finger on the sensor-control panel in the former operating direction for calibrating the two digit value at the operating unit. A cover surface of the sensor-control panel is made of glass or plastic. An independent claim is also included for an operating unit for executing the method.
