When paper money is fed into a paper money identification and counting device (10), the paper money is identified and counted by an identification and counting unit (24). A first evaluation threshold value is used to evaluate the paper money based on the paper money identification result obtained from the identification and counting unit (24), and the paper money is selectively fed to a collection unit (26) or a rejection unit (30) based on the paper money evaluation result. Then the paper money sent to the rejection unit (30) is again fed into the paper money identification and counting device (10), the paper money is identified and counted by the identification and counting unit (24), and the paper money is evaluated using a second evaluation threshold value smaller than the first evaluation threshold value, based on the paper money identification result obtained from the identification and counting unit (24). Then, information pertaining to the total of the counting result for the paper money evaluated as real when the paper money was evaluated using the first evaluation threshold value and to the counting result for the paper money evaluated as real when the paper money was evaluated using the second evaluation threshold value is output.
