The invention relates to a tool for placing or removing joint components of artificial joint sockets, especially for hip joint hypotheses. Said tool comprises an elongated shank (1) the first, distal end of which comprises a retaining portion (2) for immobilizing a joint component having a socket cavity and in the area of a second, proximal end a grip portion (3) and is characterized in that the retaining portion (2) comprises clamping means (9, 11) that can be introduced into the socket cavity and spread radially outwards and spreading means (13, 23) for spreading the clamping means (9, 11) outwards which spreading means interact with the clamping means. The design of the retaining portion (2) according to the invention allows a tight and reliable connection of the joint component to be implanted to the retaining section (2) which connection can be released just as reliably.
