A photoelectric sensor provided with: a light projecting unit (103) and a light receiving unit (104); a controller (105) functioning as a detector that compares the amount of received light obtained by the light reception process with a predefined threshold value, and thereby determines whether light is incident or light is not incident and outputs the result of the determination; and a display (100) capable of displaying the amount of received light. With regard to a plurality of light reception periods and a plurality of light incidence periods determined by the currently defined threshold value, the amount of received light during the period, from amongst the light incidence periods, at which the amount of received light is at the relative minimum and the amount of received light during the period, from amongst the light reception periods, at which the amount of received light is at the relative maximum are identified. The two identified representative amounts of received light are displayed by the display (100). Items of information representing the representative amounts of received light are outputted to external devices, and the values are displayed on the monitor of each device.
