One aspect of the invention relates to a method for increasing the excitation current, in particular for increasing the excitation current upon the activation of the generator, the rectified generator voltage of which is controlled using a controller. In order to control the generator voltage, the controller adjusts the excitation current of an excitation winding of the generator. The controller also receives a phase signal. In the method, the excitation current is quickly increased to a certain value in a first step, wherein the phase signal is evaluated at the same time. This first step lasts until the phase signal or a variable derived therefrom meets a particular condition with respect to the generator voltage. The excitation current preferably increases continuously until the condition is met. In a second step, the excitation current is increased further, preferably at a rate of change of the excitation current which is reduced in comparison with the previous fast increase. This further increase during the second step is carried out, for example, at a rate of change as in a conventional load response function.
