The invention relates to a method and device (1) for triggering the stopping of a hydraulic pump (2) having adjustable rotational speed in a hydraulic plant pre-set to a set pressure (P_c), said method comprising the steps of: comparing (A) the fluid pressure (p) of the plant with the set pressure (P_c) of the plant and varying (B) the rotational speed of said pump in order to make the pressure of the plant equal to the pre-set set pressure; verifying (C) whether the supply frequency (f) of said pump drops below a predetermined stopping supply frequency (f_STOP) and, if so, stopping (D) the pump until the pressure of the plant drops (E) below the set pressure. The stopping supply frequency (f_STOP) of the pump is determined automatically by a processing means connected to the pump, in accordance with the maximum pumping pressure (H_MAX) of the pump and the supply frequency at the maximum rotational speed (f_MAX), which are intrinsic to the pump.
