The invention relates to a method for improving the functional security and increasing the availability of an electronic control system, particularly a motor vehicle control system, comprising hardware components (1) and software components (3, 4, 5), wherein the hardware components (1) are abstracted by at least one basis software component (20) and/or a runtime environment (2), and in which an implemented security concept describes two or more software levels, wherein a first software level (4) comprises control functions of an application software and a second software level (5) is designed as functional monitoring (5), particularly for safeguarding against control function faults, wherein said method is further characterized in that a data encryption (9a, 9b, 9c), provided by at least one hardware component (1), and/or a data signature for securing the data of at least one communication channel (7) of the hardware component (1) is used with at least one first software component (3). The invention additionally describes an electronic control system for performing said method.
