A material hardness detection instrument and particularly an indentation depth measurement device for a portable digital display hardness tester comprises a hand wheel (3), a rotary encoder (5), a support base (6), and a micrometer thread pair formed by a micrometer nut (7) and a micrometer screw (8). The micrometer nut (7) is mounted in the support base (6). The micrometer screw (8) is inserted into the micrometer nut (7) and is in threaded connection to the micrometer nut (7). One end of the micrometer screw (8) is connected to the hand wheel (3) and the other end of the micrometer screw (8) is a free end. The rotary encoder (5) is mounted on the support base (6), a rotating shaft of the rotary encoder (5) and the micrometer screw (8) are driven to rotate with the rotation of the hand wheel (3), and the micrometer screw (8) moves up and down along an axial direction through the rotation of the hand wheel (3). The displacement of the micrometer screw (8) is measured by the rotary encoder (5). The device is simple in structure, light and convent to use, has a high resolution and a high precision, and outputs electronic signals to facilitate intellectualization and digitization of a portable hardness tester.
