The aim of the invention is to devise an improved method for producing oxidized cellulose fibers, oxidized cellulose fiber sheet materials, or oxidized cellulose nonwovens which is particularly simple or efficient and environmentally friendly. According to the invention, the method for producing oxidized cellulose fibers, oxidized cellulose fiber sheet materials, or oxidized cellulose nonwovens, especially oxidized cellulose wound dressing, in particular having a degree of oxidation ranging from 1 to 50 percent, preferably from 5 to 35 percent, comprises the following steps: a) using cellulose fibers, cellulose sheet materials, or cellulose nonwovens; b) bringing the temperature within a range of 25 to 80°C, preferably 30 to 60°C; c) introducing gaseous nitrogen dioxide; d) bringing the temperature within a range of 20 to less than 160°C, preferably up to 100°C; and d) neutralizing the oxidized cellulose fibers, oxidized cellulose fiber sheet materials, or oxidized cellulose nonwovens with bases, in particular gaseous ammonia.
