PURPOSE: An apparatus for improving resistance performance of ship and a method thereof are provided to reduce wave drag by reducing the height and incline of a stern wave and decreasing surf phenomenon. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for improving resistance performance of ship comprises a stern flab(12), a driving unit(16), a speed detecting unit(18), and a controller(20). The stern flab is installed to be rotatable around a turn point(14) in the stern of a ship. The driving unit adjusts the turning angle of the stern flap. The speed detecting unit detects the navigation speed of the ship. The controller calculates an optimum turning angle of the stern flap from the rotation navigation speed detected from the speed detecting unit. The controller controls the driving unit to rotate the stern flap by the calculated turning angle.
