MIXED LIQUOR FILTERABILITY TREATMENT IN A MEMBRANE BIOREACTOR

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) 10 employs methods and apparatus for injecting flux enhancing chemicals (FEC) to counteract transient actuations that cause or are likely to cause membrane fouling. The FEC injection device 32 is provided in communication with a channel 20 separating the treatment tank 12 of the MBR and the membrane filtration system 14. The mixer 36 in the channel 20 quickly mixes the injected FEC with the mixed liquid 18 flowing into the membrane tank. The injection device 32 is connected with sensors 40, 42 that detect the condition of the channel or membrane filtration system 14 or both. The FEC is added to the mixed liquor 18 entering the membrane filtration system 14 taking into account the condition of the mixed liquor 18 entering the membrane unit or the membrane operating parameters or both. The FEC injection amount can range from 0.05 to 10 mg / g MLSS. The method may include initiating infusion, adjusting the infusion concentration, and terminating the infusion.
