PURPOSE: A method for controlling the surface quality of a slab is provided to predict the depth of a hook by using the factor that affects on the fault of the hook, thereby improving the surface quality of a slab.;CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling the surface quality of a slab comprises the following the steps of: measuring the width of casting, the discharge amount of molten steel discharged from a submerged entry nozzle, the speed of casting, and the degree of superheat (S10); calculating a hook index by using the width of casting, the discharge amount, the speed of casting, and the degree of superheat at the time of the continuous casting (S20); calculating the length of the hook and the inclination of the hook by using the calculated hook index, respectively (S30); calculating the depth of the hook which is defined by the straight line from the solidification shell surface to the end of the hook by using the calculated length of the hook and the inclination of the hook (S40); and controlling the quality of the slab produced by scarfing according to the derived depth of the hook (S50).;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2013;[Reference numerals] (AA,BB) End; (S10) Measure the width of casting, the speed of casting, and the degree of the superheat of the discharge amount; (S20) Calculate a hook index by using the measured values; (S30) Calculate the length and inclination of the hook by using the calculated hook index; (S40) Calculate the depth of the hook by using the length and inclination of the hook; (S50) Control the quality of the slab by scarfing according to the derived depth of the hook
