PURPOSE: An externally installed membrane bioreactor is provided to effectively culture lactic acid bacteria with high biomass density and effectiveness. CONSTITUTION: A ceramic membrane bioreactor comprises a ceramic membrane filter(3) formed of zircon-alumina or zircon-titanium materials, a membrane filter(4) for medium sterilization, a culture device(2), and a medium preparation tank(5). The bioreactor further comprises a central control panel(1), a heat exchanger(6) for controlling culture temperature, a level controller(7), a load cell(8) for measuring consumed alkali, solenoid valve(9) for controlling temperature of the heat exchanger, a flow meter(10), a pressure gauge(11), a thermometer(14), a bubbling bottle(15), a pH electrode(17), and diaphragm valve(18). The ceramic membrane is separately mounted from the culture device and has 2-4 mm of inside diameter to reduce wall shear stress.
