The present invention is directed to a system and method for modifying the shape of a thin film of transparent material (eg, the cornea of the eye), which requires a computer controlled laser unit when subjected to lateral pressure differentials. Depending on the particular input factor, the computer causes the laser unit to execute LIOB on a predetermined surface inside the thin film. This weakens the material for the desired reshaping of the thin film in response to the pressure difference. For the perpendicular axis defined by the thin film, the surfaces parallel to the axis (eg, cylindrical surface) are separated from each other by about 200 micrometers. About 10 micrometers apart for a surface perpendicular to the axis. In each case the cutout by LIOB is only about 2 micrometers thick.
