In one embodiment, the present invention includes an instruction decoder capable of receiving an input instruction and a path selection signal and decoding the input instruction into a first instruction code or a second instruction code in response to the path selection signal. Two different instruction codes representing the same input instruction may be used by an execution unit to perform an optimized operation for different data lengths.
