A method of aligning an alignment layer and an OCB mode LCD device thereof are provided to arrange a side of an alignment layer surface in a predetermined direction and enable a liquid crystal molecule to have a desired pre tilt angle. A substrate(220) is located on a stage(285) of an ion beam applying apparatus(260). A chamber(263) forms a vacuum condition. An ion generator(266) receives inert gas through a gas supplying nozzle(278). A plasma generator(269) ionizes the inserted inactive inert gas. A vent(275) discharges the ionized ion. An ion beam(277) is applied as an alignment layer(230) on the substrate.
