A method and an apparatus for decoding an active audio matrix based on positions of a speaker and a listener are provided to recover a sound image distorted due to variation of the positions of the listener to a desired original sound image through signal correction. A method for decoding an active audio matrix includes the steps of: extracting a characteristic of each speaker signal and each speaker angle from a predetermined signal generated by a multi-channel speaker(1008); decoding stereo signals into multi-channel signals(1010) and correcting the decoded multi-channel signals based on the characteristic of the signal for each channel(1014); extracting a power vector of a signal for each channel by reflecting the speaker angle of each channel to a size of each compensated channel(1020) and extracting a vector of a virtual sound source existing between the channels based on the power vector of the signal for each channel(1030); extracting a vector value of a dominant sound image by coupling the extracted vectors of the virtual sound sources in the above-described process(1040) and normalizing a location of each channel speaker based on the vector value of the dominant sound image(1050); and distributing a gain value to the normalized location of the speaker for each channel by comparing a signal intensity of each channel with a signal intensity of the entire decoded channel(1060).
