FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: method of producing a clay- and polymer-based nanocomposite includes the following steps: (a) contacting (I) a polymer solution in an organic solvent, (II) an aqueous clay suspension, (III) a modifier and (IV) a Bronsted acid to form an emulsion, said emulsion being formed either by providing a first mixture containing a polymer solution and a Bronsted acid, and a second mixture containing an aqueous clay suspension and a modifier, and combining the first and second mixtures, or by combining the polymer solution and the clay suspension first to form an emulsion and adding to said emulsion, separately or together, a modifier and a Bronsted acid; (b) mixing the emulsion to obtain a nanocomposite; and (c) separating the nanocomposite from the emulsion.
