A method of producing direct reduction iron, carried out in a direct reduction system comprising a reduction reactor, a gas cooling apparatus, a carbon dioxide selective removal apparatus, and a reducing gas heater, comprising reducing particles containing iron oxides to direct reduction iron containing metallic iron by reaction with a high temperature reducing gas containing mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide derived from carbohydrate gaseous gas; wherein the exhaust gas leaving the specified reactor, containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and water, is purified and cooled in the indicated apparatus for cooling the gas, whereby water condenses and is removed from the specified exhaust gas; purified and cooled reducing gas is treated in said apparatus for selectively removing carbon dioxide to obtain an almost pure carbon dioxide stream, which can be withdrawn in a controlled manner from the direct reduction system; as a result, an improved quality reducing gas is produced, containing mainly hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane; wherein the first part of said improved quality reducing gas is recycled to the reactor after heating it in said reducing gas heater; said method is characterized in that the second part of said improved quality reducing gas is processed in a physical gas separation apparatus to produce a first gas
