1. System (10) that helps optimize the computer-generated 3D model of the compensator for use in planning treatment for radiation therapy, including: a graphical user interface (GUI), which includes a display (18) and a user input device (24); processor (12) that executes computer-executable instructions stored in the storage device (14), the commands include: displaying the compensator model (22, 62) on the display (18) for the user; receiving user input from the user input device (24) custom input containing editing the compensator model (22, 62); optimization of the compensator model (22, 62) based on user input; saving the optimized compensator model in the storage device (14) or on a computer-readable storage medium. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the commands further include: displaying a plurality of editing tools for the user; recalculating the dose distribution based on the optimized compensator model and displaying the recalculated dose distribution on the display; while the compensator model (22, 62) is projected onto the anatomical image of the patient (20) with the distribution of radiation doses (42) superimposed on the image of the patient (20); while the optimized model of the compensator is stored in the storage device (1 4) or on a machine-readable medium after approval by the user of an optimized compensator model. 3.
