The invention relates to a method of detecting a change in the water quality, employing a sensor comprising a working electrode and a reference electrode, an electronic device comprising a potentiostat for applying a potential defined the working electrode and measuring the resulting current on said electrode, and an electronic circuit that controls steps of said method. According to the invention, the detection method comprises the following steps: continuous cyclical scanning of the potential of the working electrode relative to the reference electrode, the potential between the oxidation and reduction of water, providing at least one current-potential curve (12) representing the water quality, comparing the current-potential curve with at least one reference current-potential curve (10) recorded previously, analysis of potential differences resulting from the comparison (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19), relative to predefined limit values, and optionally, an alert is triggered response.
