The method involves accelerating a gas with ions (6) between higher and lower pressure regions by a Laval nozzle to form a supersonic gas jet (7), and directing the supersonic gas jet through the lower pressure region into a separate pump chamber (9) in which the gas of the supersonic gas jet is pumped off. The ions are extracted from the supersonic gas jet in the lower pressure region by using electric or magnetic fields. The extracted ions are collected by a radio frequency (RF) ion funnel (13), and the collected ions are transmitted as an ion beam (14). An independent claim is also included for an ion spectrometer comprising a device for the generation of ions.
