A method for detecting defective components or faulty subsystems of an electronically controlled, a high-pressure pump fuel injection system having an internal combustion engine with the following steps:– Performing a test routine, in which an increase in and a subsequent lowering of the pressure of the fuel in the fuel injection system is carried out, wherein in the context of the test routine various parameters of the fuel injection system are determined and stored,– in a subsequent evaluation process the stored parameters for the recognition of a malfunctioning be evaluated.– in the context of the evaluation of the high-pressure pump before gear individual pump strokes are evaluated.
