The system has a measuring system measuring electric voltage at a fuel cell stack. An evaluating device evaluates the measured electrical voltage. The measuring system performs time sequence measurements of the electrical voltage, and the evaluating device computes standard deviations (41-43) of the individual series of measurements of the electrical voltages and evaluates a time course of the standard deviations. A display device displays evaluation of the time course of the standard deviations. An independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring an operating mode of a fuel cell system.
