The engine has a rotatably mounted camshaft (1) i.e. inlet camshaft, for operating gas shuttle valves of cylinders of a cylinder group. Three sliding cams (2a, 2c) for the cylinders are arranged on the camshaft in an axially displaceable manner. A common actuator (7) effectuates axial displacement of the sliding cams. Two sliding cams are connected with one sliding cam, which comprises a link portion (5). A groove (6) is formed on an outer surface of the link portion. The actuator cooperates with the groove through a coupling device (8) to axially displace the sliding cams.
