Methane production unit comprises a fermenter (2) with an enclosed inner volume having surface for immobilized microorganisms, where (i) the inner volume is connected with the environment by at least one substrate gas inlet (4) that is arranged on the fermenter, a synthesis gas outlet, a supply line (6) and an outlet (7) for liquid substances, where a diffuser (8) is provided in the mouth region of the substrate gas inlet. The methane production unit is operable with gaseous substrate containing hydrogen and carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing methane, comprising (a) introducing hydrogen-, carbon dioxide- and/or carbon monoxide containing gases as substrate into the methane production unit, in which fermenter hydrogenotrophic microorganisms are immobilized, which convert the substrate gases at least partially into methane, (b) discharging the produced methane containing gas, and (c) recycling partial stream as the substrate gas into the fermenter; and (2) a biomass fermentation plant, comprising a substrate supply, a biomass fermentation plant fermenter, and the methane production unit.
