The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (4) at an idle state. Model rotational speed of the engine in an idling operation is set. The model rotational speed is compared with actual speed to be measured of the engine in the idling operation, and an operating state of a separator coupling (15) is derived. A crankshaft moment is automatically adjusted by an idling regulation unit (25). A notification is output to a user i.e. driver, of a drive system (1) i.e. motor car (2), if a difference between the rotation speed and the actual speed exceeds a predetermined limit. An independent claim is also included for a diagnostic apparatus for diagnosing an operating condition of a separator coupling.
