The retractor has a two-stage force limiting unit provided in form of a torsion element (14) that is arranged inside a belt shaft (10). The belt shaft comprises an incision (12) exhibiting an extension corresponding to a movement path of a shaft ring (16), where the incision extends over a peripheral portion. The shaft ring is brought in intervention with a locking contour (15) of the torsion element from an assembly position by axial displacement, where the assembly position defines a force level. Another force level is adjusted based on decoupling of the torsion element and the belt shaft. The belt retractor has projections (20) for adjusting a linear contact between the belt shaft and the shaft ring.
