The damping unit has a damping agent source (13) e.g. spraying box, arranged in a chamber. A damping distributor roll (9) and polishing roll close an opening (28) in the chamber except a gap, which circulates the opening. The gap is defined by the rolls and an edge of the chamber, where the edge circulates the opening. The chamber includes vents (29) apart from the opening, a discharge outlet and/or a feed line. The vents are not arranged at a lowest point of the chamber. Each vent includes a cross-sectional area that is larger than 1 percentage of another cross-sectional area of the opening.
