The brake (2) has an electric motor (8) including a motor shaft (14) to be rotationally moved with a pinion. A force strand is coupled with the motor shaft for transferring rotational torque of motor to an actuator (26) that converts a rotational motion of a spindle (24) into a translatory motion of a brake element. The strand, actuator, motor shaft or pinion is coupled with housing (38) by a rheological-determined clutch (44), so that a translatory motion of the brake element is blocked during complete coupling of the force strand, actuator, motor shaft or pinion with the housing. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electromechanical brake.
