The unit has a coolant pump (1) acting upon a cooling circuit with coolant i.e. cooling water, and comprising a pump housing (2) in which a rotary vane wheel (4) is rotatably supported over a pump shaft (3) that is designed as a sleeve shaft. An actuator (20) is positioned among a drive, a pulley (23) of the coolant pump and the pump housing or a pump housing neck (12). The actuator comprises a servomotor (13) that is connected with a rack-and-pinion drive (21) for adjusting a push rod (10) and an associated guide plate (9). An independent claim is also included for a coolant pump.
