The method involves determining a rough estimation value for a lateral acceleration as a function of longitudinal acceleration and yaw rate of a vehicle. A threshold value is determined for the lateral acceleration as a function of the longitudinal acceleration and the yaw rate. The rough estimation value and threshold value, that correspond to a minimum of the absolute amount, are outputted as an estimate for the lateral acceleration of the vehicle.
